Joe Sudow holds an Of Counsel association with the Firm while enjoying retirement.  He recently celebrated his 97th birthday and remains the sole surviving namesake of the Kavanagh firm.  Joe maintains an office and makes weekly visits, continuing to share with colleagues his seven decades of legal experience.

Joe received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan in 1935 and his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 1938.  After practicing in Chicago, Joe became the Peoria Illinois District Rationing Attorney for the Office of Price Administration in 1943.  In that position, he worked with individuals and businesses in the central and northwestern counties of Illinois in providing government rations of gasoline and fuel oil during World War II.  In 1945, he opened his own law practice in Peoria, and in 1950, served as supervisor of the U.S. Census for the 10th Congressional District in Illinois.

Joe joined the Kavanagh firm as a partner.  During his career, Joe represented a variety of clients in corporate and business law, estate planning, and other areas.  His bar admissions included the State of Illinois, U.S. District Court for the Central, Northern, and Southern Districts of Illinois, U.S. Court of Appeals 7th Circuit, U.S. Tax Court, and the U.S. Supreme Court.   Joe gave frequent lectures on Federal taxation, corporations, uniform commercial code and estate planning, including courses for the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education.

A past president of the Peoria County Bar Association, Joe was recognized in 2005 as one of its “Pillars of the Bar” for his decades of involvement.   He also received an Honorary Alumnus Award from Bradley University.

Joe and Shirley Sudow raised two children and have resided in Peoria for over sixty years.  Joe has been active in community affairs and on the board of directors of various civic groups.
